Experimental simulation of surface pitting of degraded electrodes in resistance spot welding of aluminium alloys
نویسندگان
چکیده
A novel experimental technique, using specially designed electrodes (with machined annular and circular pits, and central cavities), was developed to simulate the effects of pitting morphology of the electrode tip face on weld nugget size and joint strength in resistance spot welding of aluminium alloys. Results of the experimental simulations indicate that the distribution of electrode contact areas and their alignment between top and bottom electrodes both affect weld quality. A complete understandingof the correlationbetween tip face features andweld nugget formationwould require three-dimensional numerical modelling; this work has provided well organised experimental data in support of future modelling work. متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Nugget Geometry and Temperature Distribution in Resistance Spot Welding
Resistance spot welding is an important manufacturing process in the automotive industry for assembling bodies. The quality and strength of the welds and, by extension, the body is mainly defined by the quality of the weld nuggets. The most effective parameters in this process are sheet material, geometry of electrodes, electrode force, current intensity, welding time and sheet thickness. The p...
متن کاملNugget formation and growth during resistance spot welding of aluminium alloy 5182
Surface interaction at the worksheet/worksheet interface during resistance spot welding of aluminium alloy 5182 with spherical tip electrodes was investigated. Oxide layer cracking and nugget formation were focused. Both experimental work and finite element analysis were employed to explain the contact behaviour at this interface. It was found that sheet separation and thus bending occurred dur...
متن کاملAnalysis of Resistance Spot Welding Process Parameters Effect on the Weld Quality of Three-steel Sheets Used in Automotive Industry: Experimental and Finite Element Simulation
In the present research, the effects of spot-welding process parameters on the nugget diameter and electrode penetration depth of spot-welded joints were investigated. To achieve this, a spot-welded joint of three-thin sheet low carbon steels (same thicknesses of 0.8 mm) was simulated as an electerical-thermal-mechanical coupling of 3D finite element model. After validating the finite element s...
متن کاملEffect of aluminium sheet surface conditions on feasibility and quality of resistance spot welding
A study investigating the effect of sheet surface condition on resistance spot welding (RSW) of aluminium has been carried out at the University of Warwick. This concentrates on two commercial automotive aluminium alloys; AA5754 and AA6111, used for structural and closure applications respectively. The results show the marked effect that surface condition can have on the RSW process. For AA5754...
